A Description of the Villa of Mr. Horace Walpole, Youngest Son of Sir Robert Walpole Earl of Orford, at Strawberry Hill, near Twickenham, Middlesex.: With an Inventory of the Furniture, Pictures, Curiosities &c. $29.95 A facsimile of the catalog of Horace Walpole’s famous villa at Strawberry Hill, the origin of Gothick architecture, and one of the treasure houses of the 18th century Strawberry Hill, Horace Walpole’s “little castle” southwest of London is the finest building in the Gothick style—the playful antiquarianism that flourished at the end of the 18th century. Here Walpole established his “Committee of Taste,”  collected furiously, and wrote the first Gothic horror novel, The Castle of Otranto. Although the villa was popular with tourists from its inception, Walpole published the Description not so much as a guide to the building as a record of its design and of its bewilderingly rich contents. Only 300 copies were printed in his lifetime, and many of these were kept for friends. This, the first facsimile, contains the final version of the text and the 26 engravings commissioned by Walpole as the definitive images of his paper castle: views of the house, the garden, the principal rooms, individual details of the decoration, and plans. |

A Pattern Book of New Orleans Architecture $35 “Like dancing in the Garden of Earthly Delights, Roulhac B. She presents two centuries of colored renderings from the New Orleans Notarial Archives in a stunning visual portrait of the city’s built heritage, while architect Gate Pratt’s pattern book of new homes designed in authentic styles provides an indispensible resource for rebuilding efforts. This work is destined to become the quintessential bible for historians, preservationists, architects, and all those interested in the true story of the architectural traditions that have shaped the ‘real’ New Orleans.”–Russell Versaci, AIA, traditional architect and author of Creating a New Old House and Roots of Home”For architects, builders, and developers working in the Crescent City, Roulhac B. Toledano’s A Pattern Book of New Orleans Architecture reveals an extraordinary new design resource. Toledano describes in detail the evolution of the city and the building types that have given the city a character unique in the world. Modern floor plans designed by local architects for historic house types demonstrate that the traditional architectural patterns of New Orleans are as accommodating today as in the past. For local practitioners and visitors wishing to build in New Orleans, Toledano’s pattern book is essential for sensitive and thoughtful design in this most exotic and precious city.”–Paul Ostergaard, AIA, Urban Design Associates, Pittsburgh, PennsylvaniaThis presentation of nineteenth-century gouache and watercolor archival paintings from the New Orleans Notarial Archives offers a glimpse at what old, renovated, restored, and new buildings in New Orleans neighborhoods not only might look like, but how they should look. Including examples of each New Orleans house type, ranging from the French colonial plantation home to |

Architecture of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, 1950-1962 $75.73 Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, founded in 1936, is one of the largest and most influential architecture firms in the world. SOM has long been known for innovation, experimentation, design excellence, and technical mastery, for an abiding interest in the contributions that buildings can make to the life of cities, and for a collaborative approach that extends to all aspects of the design and construction processes. This volume, which presents work from the 1950 s and early 1960 s, reproduces a monograph first published in 1962. In an age dominated by a few great architect-designers noted for their intensely personal art, the firm of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill for twenty-five years has been a unique force in the building of the modern city. This book is the first study of SOM s unified but far-flung operations, of the architecture created by its remarkable complex of designers and engineers working in all corners of the world. Containing photographs, site and building plans, elevation drawings, and accompanying explanatory text, it shows clearly the integrated and pioneering work of a great American firm. From Lever House to the Chase Manhattan Bank, from Oak Ridge to the Inland Steel Headquarters, from a school for the deaf to a rare-book library at Yale, SOM has achieved a high perfection in standards of structural design, continually refined excellence of finish, and vitality and elegance of experimentation. But it has done more than that. Eschewing convenient routine solutions, SOM has demonstrated that a large organization need not be uniform, conservative, or schematized. In every aspect of the building process, in every detail of design andexecution, it has shown imaginative and experimental brilliance. The curtain walls of Lever House, the exposed reinforced concrete ribs of other skyscrapers, the spatial organization and lighting in their offices, the steel tetrahedrons of the Air Force Academy Chapel: these technological innovations have virtually |

Atomic Ranch: Design Ideas for Stylish Ranch Homes $40 Atomic Ranch is an in-depth exploration of post-World War II residential architecture in America. Mid-century ranches (1946-1970) range from the decidedly modern gable-roofed Joseph Eichler tracts in the San Francisco Bay area and butterfly wing houses in Palm Springs, Florida, to the unassuming brick or stucco L-shaped ranches and split-levels so common throughout the United States. Authors Michelle Gringeri-Brown and Jim Brown, founders and publishers of the popular quarterly Atomic Ranch magazine, extol the virtues of the tract, split-level, rambler home and its many unique qualities: private front facades, open floor plans, secluded bedroom wings, walls of glass, and an easy-living lifestyle. From updated homes with high-end Italian kitchens, terrazzo floors, and modern furniture to affordable homeowner renovations with eclectic thrift-store furnishings, Atomic Ranch presents twenty-five homes showcasing inspiring examples of stylish living through beautiful color photographs, including before and after shots, design-tip sidebars, and a thorough resource index. Atomic Ranch reveals: Hallmarks of the ranch styleInspiring original ranch homesRanch house transformations and makeoversPreservation of mid-century neighborhoodsAdding personality to a ranch home Yards and landscaping Plus, a helpful resource section and index! |

Auldbrass: Frank Lloyd Wright’s Southern Plantation $36.83 A revised and updated edition of this comprehensive volume dedicated to Wright’s only plantation design. Although Frank Lloyd Wright designed more than 1,000 projects during his long and prolific career, Auldbrass Plantation, in Yemassee, South Carolina, is the only plantation he ever designed. It is also one of the largest and most complex projects he ever undertook. Wright had an unusually intense commitment to Auldbrass, and worked on it, off and on, for more than twenty years, from 1938 until his death in 1959. Because Auldbrass was private and because it fell into disrepair in the 1960s after the owners’ death, it was rarely photographed or studied, and as a consequence little has been known about this major work. With a recently completed restoration and new photography, this book affords a rare opportunity to see one of Wright’s greatest works, as the master himself originally envisioned it. Through photos, plans, and drawings, we see what Wright planned, and how it has finally all been either restored or realized for the first time. In 1986, film producer Joel Silver (Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, 48 Hours, Predator, Romeo Must Die, The Matrix, and over forty other films) bought Auldbrass. He had earlier bought and meticulously restored Wright’s famous 1923 Storer House in Hollywood. Now he has again collaborated with Wright’s grandson, architect Eric Lloyd Wright, who restored the Storer House, to restore the Auldbrass Plantation. |

Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: Schloss Cecilienhof is a palace in the northern part of the Neuer Garten park in Potsdam, close to the Jungfernsee lake. Courtyard with red flower star, planted by Soviet armed forces in 1945 Potsdam Conference: Churchill, Truman and Stalin in the Cecilienhof garden, 25 July 1945Cecilienhof was the last palace built by the Hohenzollern family. Emperor Wilhelm II of Germany had it erected for his son Crown Prince Wilhelm of Germany and the crown prince’s wife Duchess Cecilie of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. The house was designed by Paul Schultze-Naumburg to look like an English Tudor country house and built between 1914 and 1917. Its design was based on a house called ‘Bidston Court’ (later ‘Hillbark’) on the Wirral Peninsula. which in turn was inspired by Little Moreton Hall. The interior was furnished according to plans by Paul Troost, who originally had designed steamship décors. The brick and oak timberframe building including 6 courtyards and 55 carved brick chimney tops should have been completed in 1915, nevertheless construction delayed due to the outbreak of World War I and Crown Prince Wilhelm and Cecilie could not move in until August 1917. Wilhelm followed his father into exile one year later, while Cecilie stayed at the palace until she fled from the approaching Red Army in February 1945. Cecilienhof was the location of the Potsdam Conference between 17 July and 2 August 1945. Afore the rooms had been largely refurnished to match the taste of the participants. Winston Churchill, later Clement Attlee, Joseph Stalin and Harry S. Truman met at the round table in the great hall. On 26 July 1945 Churchill and Truman issued the Potsdam Declaration defining the |

Blueprint Remodel: Tract Home Transformations That Turn Everyday to Extraordinary $1.99 A quick word of caution: What you are about to see may shock you. Not to worry, though-the shock-factor in this book is meant to inspire, not scare. The star of this show is the ordinary American tract house. The latest in Gibbs Smith, Publisher’s design series by Michelle Kodis, Blueprint Remodel looks at ten cookie-cutter tract houses in a new light. Uninspired siting, run-of-the-mill floor plans, boxy rooms, low ceilings, poor lighting, and bland materials are transformed to well-designed, distinctive homes, adding character and charm to fit with any style and budget. From a one-floor interior makeover in an Omaha tract for a couple of empty-nesters to a full renovation of a Texas bungalow to accommodate a growing family, these examples encompass a variety of challenges and solutions, and they include everything from sleek modern design to a remodel influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement. Featured in a wide range of cost, style, size, and location and illustrated with phenomenal before-and-after photographs, these profiles will enbolden tract house homeowners to remodel, taking their homes from mediocre to marvelous. Breuer Houses $61.35 The Hungarian-born architect Marcel Breuer (1902-81) rose to prominence as the first student in the Bauhaus to graduate to master as head of the furniture workshop. He emigrated to the United States in 1937, where he taught at Harvard University, influencing a generation of practitioners. As the head of his own firm, Breuer became known for designs as diverse and powerful as the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the UNESCO headquarters in Paris and the iconic ‘Wassily’ chair — the first chair to use tubular steel, which revolutionized the furniture industry. Breuer, like many architects who work simultaneously on small- and large-scale commissions, used residential architecture as a laboratory for all of his design ideas. Not only is the quality and quantity of Breuer’s residential output impressive, but when it is seen in sequence one can perceive a development of his spatial mastery and expertise.Because of the interplay of spaces and the daring juxtaposition of materials, Breuer’s houses have had a profound influence on residential architecture around the world and upon generations of young designers. This monograph is a comprehensive study of Breuer’s house designs from 1923 to 1973. Richly illustrated with drawings, plans and archival photography, the book provides insight to the working methods of a key architectural figure of the twentieth century. |

Excerpt: The Cortile del Belvedere , the Belvedere courtyard , designed by Donato Bramante from 1506 onwards, was a major architectural work of the High Renaissance at the Vatican Palace in Rome ; its concept and details reverberating in courtyard design, formalized piazzas and garden plans throughout Western Europe for centuries. Conceived as a single enclosed space, the long Belvedere court connected the Vatican Palace with the Villa Belvedere in a series of terraces connected by stairs, and was contained on its sides by narrow wings.Bramante himself never saw the work completed, and before the end of the sixteenth century it been irretrievably altered by a building across the court, dividing it into two separate courtyards.Early History and Bramante’s Design Innocent VIII began construction of the Villa Belvedere on high ground overlooking old St Peter’s Basilica , in 1484. Here, where the breezes could tame the Roman summer, he had the Florentine architect Antonio Pollaiuolo , design and complete by 1487 a little summerhouse, which also offered spectacular views to the east of central Rome and north to the pastures beyond the Castel Sant’Angelo (the Prati di Castello ). This villa suburbana was the first pleasure house to be built in Rome since Antiquity. When Pope Julius II came to the papal throne in 1503, he moved his growing collection of Roman sculpture here, to an enclosed courtyard within the Villa Belvedere itself. The ancient sculpture of Laocoön and His Sons was, soon after its discovery, purchased by Julius and brought here by 1506. Shortly |

Country, Park & City $48.39 After beginning his career as an architect in London, Calvert Vaux (1824-1895) came to the Hudson River valley in 1850 at the invitation of Andrew Jackson Downing, the reform-minded writer on houses and gardens. As Downing’s partner, and after Downing’s death in 1852, Vaux designed country and suburban dwellings that were remarkable for their well-conceived plans and their sensitive rapport with nature. By 1857, the year he published his book Villas and Cottages, Vaux had moved to New York City. There he asked Frederick Law Olmsted to join him in preparing a design for Central Park. He spent the next 38 years defending and refining their vision of Central Park as a work of art. After the Civil War, he and Olmsted led the nascent American park movement with their designs for parks and parkways in Brooklyn, Buffalo, and many other American cities. Apart from undertakings with Olmsted, Vaux cultivated a distinguished architectural practice. Among his clients were the artist Frederic Church, whose dream house, Olana, he helped create; and the reform politician Samuel Tilden, whose residence on New York’s Gramercy Park remains one of the country’s outstanding Victorian buildings. A pioneering advocate for apartment houses in American cities, Vaux designed buildings that mirrored the advance of urbanization in America, including early model housing for the poor. He planned the original portions of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the American Museum of Natural History and conceived a stunning proposal for a vast iron and glass building to house the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia. Especially notable are the many bridges and other charming structures that he designed for Central Park.Vaux considered the Park’s Terrace, decorated by J. W. Mould, as his greatest achievement. An active participant in the cultural and intellectual life of New York, Vaux was an idealist who regarded himself as an artist and a professional. And while much has been written on Olmsted, com |

A presentation of the courtyard as a building block of the city is followed by coverage of the complete spectrum of types – cluster, network, carpet, terraces, etc.The second volume is devoted to the various types of row house, a particularly widespread form of residential structure. A general discussion of the row as organizing principle – the row as urban building block, linear space, ways of handling corners – is followed by the systematic presentation of the different types.Within each type, variants are distinguished according to how they organize space, their number of floors, etc. The range of possible solutions is presented in uniform ground plans newly drawn to scale. |

Designing Gardens $15.19 The first part of this book explores Arabella Lennox-Boyd’s philosophy and establishes the principles of her approach to design: the importance of relating the garden not only to the landscape but also to the spirit of the house and the individuality of the owner; how to establish the bare bones of a design – enclosing garden rooms, and opening up garden space; how to use vertical structures to best effect; and how to clothe bare bones with plants appropriate to the type of garden. Design ideas for everything from paving and pergolas to perennial plantings burst from every page, captured in Andrew Lawson’s atmospheric images and Lennox-Boyd’s plans. The second part of the book looks in detail at more than 20 very different gardens, many these are private and never photographed before. |
